With the fall of the Roman Empire and barbarian invasions, Rome fell into deep decline. During this period, the popes played a decisive role in preserving the city and gradually transforming it into a Christian city. The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, built next to the Roman Forum in 526, bears witness to this transformation. Its apse mosaic is considered one of the most significant in the history of art.
